DXF LITHIUM POLYMER BATTERY OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS AND PRECAUTIONS MUST BE READ CAREFULLY AND FOLLOWED EXACTLY BEFORE USE. (WARNING: INCORRECT USE OR OPERATION OF THE BATTERIES CAN CAUSE FIRE, DAMAGE TO YOUR DEVICE, CREATE THE PROBABILITY OF PROPERTY DAMAGE, COLLATERAL DAMAGE AND SERIOUS INJURY. IF ANY UNEXPRECTED SITUATION HAPPENS, PLEASE TAKE NECESSARY AND REASONABLE MEASURES IN A TIMELY MANNER TO PREVENT FURTHER DAMAGE. 1. Never charge the battery in reverse. Confirm the polarity before wiring or charging. If the cell is not connected correctly the cell cannot be charged. Charging a cell with reverse polarity will cause damage to the cell which leads to degradation of cell performance and damage the cell integrity which could lead to heat generation and or leakage. 2. Never strike the cell or battery with any sharp objects, DO NOT bend the battery hit or allow the battery to fall. 3. It is recommended that gloves be worn before handling the battery. 4. Never open or deform the folding edge of the cell. 5. Never disassemble the battery or cells. The disassembling of the battery or cells may create an internal short circuit, which can cause gassing, and potentially fire. 6. The batteries should not have electrolyte liquid leaking from the cell’s, leaking electrolyte is dangerous and can cause fire, serious harm or injury. 7. Never spray, soak or immerse the battery or cells in any form of liquid. 8. Any cell or battery replacement shall be done only by an authorized repair agent, authorized assembly company or d evice supplier. 9. Cells could be subject to damage through normal distribution. If any abnormal feature of the cells is found such as dam age to the plastic envelop, deformation of the cell package, odor caused be electrolyte, visible electrolyte leakage or any other visible abnormality, these cells shall not be used and must be handled as per the instructions of the supplier. 10. If at any time the battery becomes damaged, hot, begins to swell or “balloon” discontinue use, charging or discharging immediately. Quickly and safely disconnect the battery from the charger or device, place the battery in an open area away from flammable materials inside a fireproof container (such as a LIPO safety bag). After one hour, if the battery condition has stabilized, remove the battery from service. DO NOT continue to handle, attempt to use, or transport the battery. Failure to follow these procedures can cause damage to the battery, personal property and or cause serious injury. BEFORE USE 1. Please read and follow the charger instruction manual or book before charging or discharging batteries. 2. Always check the voltage of cells and or batteries before each charging session to ensure they are at or above the minimum safe starting voltage. If starting voltage is below recommend levels the cells or batteries have been over discharged or have experienced a failure DO NOT use or attempt to charge batteries. 3. Always check the batteries before charging for any type of damage. Check the battery packaging, wiring and connectors for defects, which may cause a short circuit and eventual battery failure. 4. Make sure you are using charge leads which are compatible with the battery connectors. 5. You should check the polarity of the battery cable and charger lead carefully before connection to avoid any shorty circuit. 6. Always verify the charger is in good working condition. A poor-quality charger could be dangerous. 7. It is solely your responsibility to ensure that the charger you use works properly. Always monitor the charging process to ensure batteries are being charged properly. Failure to do so may result in fire. CHARGING 1. Only a charger designed for Lithium Polymer (LiPO/LIHV) batteries can be used to charge the battery. DO NOT use a NIMH/NICD/LIFEPO4/LEAD ACID charger. If the charger can support different battery types, be sure to select lithium polymer (LIPO) or if using a high voltage Lith ium Polymer Battery (LiHV – max 4.35v per cell) mode on the charger. Failure to do so may result in fire, which may cause personal injury and property damage. Always set the charger to balance charge at a recommended charge rate of 1C. 2. You should always charge batteries in an open area away from flammable materials, liquids and surfaces. 3. Never charge batteries inside the model. 4. Never charge batteries that are hot to touch (about 100°F/37°C). DO NOT handle batteries until they are at ambient temperature or cool to touch. 5. You should always set the charger to the proper cell count and/or voltage listed on batteries label. 6. You should always set the charger to the amp charge rate as listed on batteries Label. The charger should never be set to charge batteries at a rate greater than 1C (one (1) times the capacity of batteries in amp hours) unless another C rate is specified in the manufacturer’s product documentation, or the rate is preset as part of a specific battery and charger combination. DO NOT alter the charge rate once charging has begun. 7. Never overcharge batteries beyond the capacity listed on batteries label. 8. Never overcharge batteries over their rated maximal voltage (4.2v/Cell for normal LIPO batteries and 4.35v/Cell for HiV LIPO batteries). 9. You must choose series charging if two or more battery packs are connected in series. 10. The use of a good quality charger designed for balance charging LIPO batteries is highly recommended. When charging your batteries please make sure the surrounding area is clean and dry without sundries. DO NOT charge without monitoring the process. Use of a quality LIPO bag or LIPO sack is recommended when charging to ensure safety. Stop charging immediately when the battery is fully charged. DO NOT keep the charger and the battery connected for a long period of time when the battery is fully charged. DXF will not be responsible for any personal injury or property loss, or any kind of accident caused through improper use or charging. DISCHARGING 1. Never discharge batteries at amperage rate higher than specified on batteries’ labels. 2. Never allow the temperature of batteries to exceed 140°F (60°C) during discharge. Adequate cooling for batteries is required especially when discharging at or near maximum rates. 3. Never discharge batteries to a voltage below which they are rated by the manufacture when measured under load (connected to the vehicle or a charger capable of discharge). Batteries discharged to voltage lower than the lowest approved voltage may be damaged and result in a loss of performance, potential fire when batteries are recharged. 4. Never discharge batteries to a level below 3.4V per cell under load. 5. For DXF Lithium Polymer batteries, we recommend cut off voltage is set to 3.4V per cell. 6. Never leave batteries unattended during the discharging process. During the discharge process, user should monitor the process constantly and react to any potential problem that may occur. 7 . In case of emergency, discontinue the process immediately, disconnect the battery from the charger and place in a safe area, and observe it for approximately one hour. This may cause the battery to leak and the reaction with air may cause the chemicals to ignite resulting in a fire. A safe area should be outside of any building or vehicle and away from any combustible materials, people, or buildings. A battery can still ignite even after one hour. 8. Before use check the condition of the batteries, if any odor, visible deformity, weeping or change in product shape or cells are not balanced STOP use immediately. STORAGE 1. DO NOT directly connect the terminals with metal objects. This will short circuit batteries resulting in heat and electrical discharge. 2. Never carry, transport, or store loose batteries together as the battery’s terminal may contact one another causing a short circuit. 3. Never expose batteries to extreme temperature or direct sunlight. The batteries should be kept in storage within -10°C~45°C range environmental condition. If the battery must be placed into storage for a long period of time (Over 3 months), the environmental storage conditions should be: a. Temperature: 23⨦5°C b. Humidity: 65⨦/- 20%RH 4. The cell voltage for a long-time storage should be 3.7v and 3.85v range per cell. 5. Always disconnect batteries when not in use and store batteries in a non-conductive and fireproof container (such as a LIPO safety bag). 6. Never alter, puncture, or impact batteries or related components. DAMAGE LIMITS DXF will not be liable for special, direct or indirect or consequential damages, loss of profits or commercial loss in any way connected with the product, whether claim is based in contract, warranty, negligence. From our own perspective the most important objective from your LiPO power source is voltage hold - meaning what is the amount of potential energy in the LiPO after use, the higher the number the better followed by amperage - what amperage can the power source deliver to your system. To check if your LiPO delivers the voltage and amperage that you need is easier than we might think. Look at your lap times - did you do consistent lap times through the race, was your fastest laps towards the second half of the race of even right towards the end? If so you have all the power you will need. We have found in many cases the Internal Resistance in any system is usually higher than almost any brand of new LiPO batteries, meaning that your ability to accept power and amps in the speed controller and motor is limited more by IR than the power source. To help customers and racers we have put together the following information in an effort to help you get the most performance from your power source. It is worth noting that in most cases the Internal Resistance shown on almost every brand of RC LiPO charger is inaccurate - in the iCharger DX8 manual it even makes statement to the same, meaning, it does not show the correct internal resistance number for a number of factors. In essence the charger passes current to the battery, causing lithium ions to move through the electrolyte from the cathode to the anode and then the charger manufacturer assumes the internal resistance calculations - these assumptions are what leads to inaccurate readings - that said, assuming that the LiPO battery, charge cables and power source remain constant the data can provide the user with directional information, changing any of these mainstays will lead to further inaccuracies. While it might seem counterintuitive to the local RC LiPO expert stock class racer at your local track, the internal resistance of a battery doesn't actually decrease when the charge amperage is increased. In fact, the opposite is usually true: higher charge currents will most likely lead to increased internal resistance due to factors like Joule heating and electrochemical reactions within the battery. However, there's a misconception that might be leading to this these people to believe otherwise. When measuring the internal resistance of a battery, techniques like the pulse discharge method are often used. 1. These methods involve applying a brief high-current pulse to the battery and measuring the resulting voltage drop. 2. Under these conditions, the battery's internal resistance might appear lower due to the way the measurement is taken. Here's why: Chargers typically use Pulse Discharge Method. This method relies on the assumption that the battery's internal resistance remains constant during the short pulse, your charger will only check the IR every 30 or 60 seconds. However, this isn't always accurate, especially for batteries with significant internal resistance. The high current pulse can temporarily heat the battery, which can lead to a slight decrease reading on the charger in internal resistance. This can make the measured resistance appear lower than the actual value under normal operating conditions. Battery Chemistry and Design: The internal resistance of a battery is influenced by its chemistry, design, and state of charge (SOC). Llthium-ion (the chemistry we use in our Lithium Polymer batteries) can exhibit lower internal resistance at higher charge rates due to improved ion transport within the electrolyte solution. However, this effect is typically limited and can be offset by other factors, such as increased Joule heating. While the internal resistance of a battery might appear lower under certain measurement conditions, it's important to remember that this doesn't necessarily reflect the true behaviour of the LiPO battery under normal operating conditions in our RC Cars. Higher charge currents can typically increase internal resistance, leading to reduced battery performance and lifespan. In more simple terms - whilst charging and only whilst charging you will get data on your screen that shows lower numbers however in reality during discharge this will lead to increased internal resistance which is where we really want to see the benefits from lower IR. Internal resistance of a LiPO battery actually decreases as the temperature of the cells increases due to the following factors: 1. Increased Ionic Mobility: Electrolyte: The electrolyte within a battery is a solution containing ions that carry the electric charge. As the temperature rises, these ions gain more kinetic energy, making them move faster. This increased mobility allows them to conduct electricity more efficiently, reducing the resistance within the electrolyte. 2. Reduced Viscosity: Electrolyte Flow: The viscosity of the electrolyte decreases with increasing temperature. This means the electrolyte can flow more easily, reducing the resistance to the movement of ions. 3. Improved Electrode Reactions: Chemical Reactions: The chemical reactions occurring at the electrodes of a battery, where ions are exchanged, are temperature-dependent. Higher temperatures can accelerate these reactions, leading to a smoother flow of charge and lower internal resistance. Important Note: While a moderate increase in temperature generally lowers internal resistance, it's crucial to maintain the battery within its optimal temperature range. Excessively high temperatures can lead to accelerated degradation and potential safety hazards. Therefore, while a moderate temperature increase can improve battery performance, it's essential to balance this with the need to avoid extreme conditions that could damage the battery. We recommend to avoid deep discharges - more damage is done to the lipo through deep discharge which elevates temperatures well above a safe range. This means careful consideration around the capacity requirements for your racing. Charging Lithium Polymer Batteries A Lithium Ion cell is fully charged when the current drops to a set level. In lieu of trickle charge, some chargers apply a topping charge when the voltage drops. The advised charge rate of any Lithium Polymer cell is between 0.5C and 1C ; we recommend charging at 0.8C or less to prolong battery life; however, some cells can take a higher charge C-rate however the battery life will be reduced and you assume all risks and associated damages. Increasing the charge current does not hasten the full-charge state by much . Although the battery reaches the voltage peak quicker, the saturation charge will take longer accordingly. With higher current, Stage 1 is shorter but the saturation during Stage 2 will take longer. A high current charge will, however, quickly fill the battery to about 70 percent. Some Lithium Polymer Battery packs may experience a temperature rise of about 5ºC (9ºF) when reaching full charge. This could be due to the protection circuit and/or elevated internal resistance, the dynamic IR of all LiPo batteries increase along with the SOC. Discontinue using the battery or charger if the temperature rises more than 10ºC (18ºF) under moderate charging speeds. Full charge occurs when the battery reaches the voltage threshold and the current drops to 3 percent of the rated current. A battery is also considered fully charged if the current levels off and cannot go down further. Elevated self-discharge might be the cause of this condition. Lithium Polymer Batteries do not need to be fully charged as is the case with lead acid, nor is it desirable to do so. In fact, it is better not to fully charge because a high voltage stresses the battery. Choosing a lower voltage threshold or eliminating the saturation charge altogether, prolongs battery life but this reduces the runtime.
